Kosher BBQ Made Easy

As the warmer weather starts to roll around, the idea of a barbecue may sound like a fabulous idea but being kosher can make life more difficult. Most barbecues will be out of bounds so although they may smell appetizing, it’s not possible to join in.

The good news is that it’s never been easier to have your own barbecue without breaking any of the kosher rules. Kohn’s have a fantastic range of delicious kosher foods and meat that are perfect for any summer barbecue.

Get Your Grill On

If you can’t wait to get some meat sizzling away, being kosher doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck for choice. There’s a mouthwatering array of meats that are perfect for barbecue cooking.

A big ribeye is the ultimate BBQ food and served medium rare makes a satisfying addition to any plate. Starting hot and finishing up on a low heat gives the perfect char without burning the meat. Of course, there’s no need to stop with just a single steak as there are bison short ribs and hamburger patties that are perfect slapped in a bun.

Bone-in chicken products such as thighs or wings are delightful cooked slowly on the grill. Make sure they’re on a low-heat area and allow them to gently cook until they’re done. The end result is a tantalizing smokey flavor that permeates through every bite, and meat that’s so tender it falls apart in your hands.

Take Care of Your Utensils

During a barbecue, your plates, pans, and utensils will all be touching kosher meats either while they’re hot or in the process of being cooked. This means that they can’t be used to prepare, cook or eat dairy foods even after they’re clean.

If you plan on enjoying other types of outdoor food, such as ice-creams or a picnic, make sure you have separate sets of vessels and utensils for meat and dairy and don’t mix them up!

The same applies to grills; you can’t use the same surface to switch between the different types of food. If you purchase a second-hand grill you’ll need to kasher it before use to ensure it’s considered to be kosher.

Plan in Advance

For so long, barbecues were out of the question for Jewish families but the availability of kosher meats and other ingredients means that they can now join in the fun. However, kosher barbecues are one of the hottest things right now so make sure you plan in advance.

Getting kosher food isn’t as easy as buying non-kosher good as you can’t just wander into any supermarket or store. The good news there are now shops like Kohn’s dedicated to providing kosher meats and all the other ingredients you’ll need for a barbecue no-one will ever forget.

You can order from Kohn’s online which is helpful as it means you have the peace of mind of knowing you’ve got the meat you need. There’s nothing worse than telling the family to come round for a barbecue only to discover you can’t get the kosher ingredients you want!

As well as meat from the butcher shop, you’ll find kosher bread, condiments and wine so you can plan a big feast for all.
