For anyone who follows the Orthodox Jewish religion, ensuring that all the foods that you eat are kosher couldn’t be more important. According to the Jewish religious law, however, there are not only some foods which can’t be included in the diet at all, but also some foods which must not be eaten together.

There are three types of kosher food – dairy, meat and parve. Although meat and dairy products can’t be eaten or cooked together, parve ingredients are neutral and so can be eaten with any kind of dish. Since there is also a required waiting period between eating dairy and meat foods, parve foods are ideal for eating as a snack between meals.

Which Foods Are Parve?

Any kind of food which is neither meat nor dairy, or prepared using meat or dairy products, is considered to be parve. Some examples of parve foods include vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, legumes, vegetable oils and beans.

Despite the fact that fish and eggs are animal products, they are also considered to be parve, although many Orthodox families don’t cook or eat meat and fish together. However, even if a food appears to be parve, it’s still important to ensure that it hasn’t been made on equipment which also handles dairy products, and checking labels is essential.

Finding Parve Foods

When keeping kosher is essential, it’s always an extra challenge when shopping and eating out. Ensuring that everything that you buy is suitable for you to eat isn’t as easy as it might seem, especially when buying manufactured products which could have been made in a factory that also handles non-kosher or non-parve ingredients. That’s why it’s such a relief for so many Orthodox Jews to find a deli that specializes in supplying only the finest kosher and parve foods.
